PM: We'll Have to Take Special Measures in Mestia Municipality

"We will have to introduce special measures in the Mestia Municipality. There will be some restrictions on movement," Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia stated today in relation to the fact that 17 new cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region.

In his words, medical brigades are already working on the spot to conduct massive testing of the population.

"Unfortunately, we have to take special measures in Mestia municipality. Of course, there will be some restrictions on movement. Additional medical brigades have already been sent to actively start the testing regime. We understand that there are many tourists in Mestia. No-one will be left without attention, and there is nothing to panic about, we're manage the process in detail. The healthcare system is ready so that if there is an increase in the number of infections, we can calmly manage these numbers as before. There is no reason to be nervous," the head of the government said.

The final decision on introducing preventive measures in Svaneti will be taken at today's meeting of the Interagency Coordination Council.

25 new cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in Georgia in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number to 1250.

"Out of 25 new cases of the coronavirus, 17 have been confirmed in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region," the Deputy of the State Representative of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Nino Vibliani announced. 

She added that a person infected with the virus was visiting a family in Mestia municipality in Svaneti, and locals became infected. 

"In-depth epidemiological and laboratory research is underway in the region. 5 brigades of the Center for Disease Control will work all day in the villages today, and biological material will be taken from all the residents," noted Vibliani.
