PM: UNGA Resolution Proves that Georgia's Territorial Integrity has Fair Int'l Support

"At the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, which has been physically held for the first time during this global pandemic, a resolution in support of IDPs from Abkhazia and Samachablo was passed with an unprecedented 84 votes," Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia stated at the presentation of Zaza Dugladze, the majoritarian candidate of Khashuri and Kareli.

The head of the government assessed the fact as a victory of Georgian diplomacy and proof that Georgia has global, fair international support in terms of restoration of its territorial integrity.

"Today, we are in Khashuri, Kartli, and we cannot but remember the occupation. We cannot but remember that today we have tens of thousands of displaced people in the country. We must recall this especially today because it has just become known that at the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, which has been physically held for the first time during this global pandemic, a resolution submitted by 54 countries in support of IDPs from Abkhazia and Samachablo was passed with an unprecedented 84 votes. This is a victory of our diplomacy and proof that Georgia has global, fair international support in terms of restoration of its territorial integrity," he said.

On September 3, the UN General Assembly, within its 74th session, adopted the Resolution on the 'Status of Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia and the Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia, Georgia' that was initiated by Georgia and 53 sponsoring states.

The Resolution condemns the forced demographic changes in the occupied regions, emphasizes the right of all internally displaced persons and refugees, regardless of their ethnicity, to a safe and dignified return to their places of origin, and focuses upon the need to fully respect and protect their property rights. The Resolution reiterates the importance of unimpeded humanitarian access in the regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali Region.
