Karabakh Conflict: Armenia Denies Reports that Azerbaijan Took the City of Jabrayil
"Azerbaijan’s Army has liberated from occupation the city of Jabrayil and several surrounding villages," the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, wrote on his Twitter page.
The Armenian side denies this information.
Azerbaijan claims that the city of Jabrayil is part of their sovereign territory, which for years, along with Nagorno-Karabakh, was "under military occupation by Armenia."
A spokesman for the Armenian Defense Minister Shushan Stepanyan, stated that "The twitter accounts of Azeri and Turkish officials are jumping the queue and are now celebrating the “liberation” of Jabrayil, which is yet another example of fake news. And soon we will present the “Escape from Madaghis” documentary."
Another armed military confrontation between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been in an active phase for 7 days now.
Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry said on October 4 that Armenian forces targeted Ganja, its second city, with missiles.
The Azerbaijani cities of Terter and Goradiz had also been targeted, the ministry said.
Armenia denied that it had directed fire 'of any kind' toward Azerbaijan, but the de facto leader of the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region said his forces had destroyed a military air base in Ganja.
In turn, Armenian forces report the shelling of Stepanakert, the main city of Nagorno-Karabakh.
"Azerbaijani forces are shelling civilian targets in Stepanakert with rockets," Armenian Defense Ministry spokesman Artsrun Hovhannisian was quoted as saying.
