Belarus Puts Opposition Leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya on Wanted List

Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, an opposition leader of Belarus, has been put on the country’s wanted list. The RIA news agency’s citation of Russia’s Interior Ministry claims that the decision comes after Tikhanovskaya allegedly made calls to overthrow the constitutional order.

The country’s investigators say they have proof of the Belarusian opposition coordination council’s members attempt to endanger national security.

On Tuesday, Tikhanovskaya set an ultimatum for President Lukashenko: "On October 26, all enterprises will begin a strike, all roads will be blocked, state-owned stores will no longer have any sales," unless Lukashenko resigns, stops the violence, and frees political prisoners.

This came after the Belarusian police became more violent against the government protesters in the streets. On Monday, in addition to water cannons, tear gas, and flare guns that the forces had already used on the demonstrators, they threatened to bring in combat weapons.

Tikhanovskaya fled to Lithuania after Lukashenko’s very controversial win in the August 9 elections.
