Rasmussen: Elections Showed Georgians' Commitment to Euro-Atlantic Integration
"I hope that Georgian political parties will continue to defend democracy from the front lines," former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen wrote on social media.
Rasmussen writes that in order to strengthen confidence in the election results, violations need to be properly addressed.
"I am glad that Saturday's elections once again showed the commitment of Georgians to Euro-Atlantic integration. Voter turnout was high despite the pandemic.
"International observers claim that the parliamentary elections were competitive and free. However, in order to strengthen confidence in the election results, violations need to be properly addressed.
"On October 31, no significant cases of interference from outside forces were reported. The Alliance for Democracy Foundation has worked with all major political parties to introduce decent, ethical digital campaign principles that will not give harmful forces fertile ground for interference. However, this is not enough to be calm. I hope that Georgian political parties will continue to defend democracy from the front lines. I will continue to raise my voice in support of Georgia's Euro-Atlantic path!" Rasmussen wrote.
