MEPs: Georgian Gov’t Should Reach Out for Dialogue with Opposition
MEPs Andrius Kubilius, Rasa Juknevičienė and Lithuanian MP Žygimantas Pavilionis have issued a joint statement regarding the ongoing election-related controversies in Georgia and called on the government to reach out for immediate dialogue with the opposition.
“The situation that followed the October 31 parliamentary election is a matter of concern for us. While the elections were competitive and voters had real alternatives to choose from, the conduct of elections was impacted by pervasive allegations of pressure on voters, with all observer organizations noting a blurring line between the state and the ruling party throughout the campaign and on election day, which, as a result, has reduced public confidence”, reads the statement.
The joint statement urges the government to respond to the aspirations of Georgian citizens to live in a democratic society that recognizes basic human rights, such as is the right to vote.
“We reiterate our call for a credible and inclusive legal process for remedying substantiated electoral violations to ensure that the will of the voters is respected”, reads the statement.
The MEPs further called on the government to restrict the usage of police force against peaceful protesters and refrain from igniting violence on the streets.

Opposition members and activists continue to hold protests in front of the CEC building to demand the resignation of CEC chairwoman Tamar Zhvania and a re-run of the elections. The opposition refuses to recognize the election results, saying they have been manipulated. Many have refused to participate in the work of the new legislature.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has announced that all persons who violate the restrictions on movement and stay outside to protest after 22:00 shall be fined GEL 2,000.
