Meeting Ongoing Between US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Opposition Leaders
A meeting is underway between US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Philip Reeker and leaders of the opposition parties at the Sheraton Metechi Palace Hotel.
Leaders of some opposition parties said before the meeting that they would talk about the ongoing political processes and the elections.
The meeting is being held behind closed doors.
Giorgi Vashadze, leader of the opposition Strategy Builder Party, noted that the meeting is very important.
"We have our requirements. We will listen to our American partners' opinions, who have a very important role to play, both in terms of Georgian democracy and national security," he said.
Former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili said that the meeting was scheduled suddenly, a fact which was welcomed.
"I welcome the fact that an unscheduled meeting has suddenly been scheduled with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Philip Reeker, the highest-ranking diplomat of the United States in Europe and the surrounding region, who has the authority to resolve specific issues. The meeting was not scheduled with the opposition, it was not in the protocol, which of course, in my opinion, was not right - now it has been scheduled,” Saakashvili said.
