Irakli Kobakhidze: As Expected, All 17 Candidates of GD Won Parliamentary Seats
"Based on the preliminary results of the voting, as expected, all 17 candidates of the Georgian Dream won parliamentary seats," said Irakli Kobakhidze, the Executive Secretary of the ruling party.
He noted that "More than half a million fellow citizens showed high civic responsibility today and went to the polls."
“Accordingly, Georgian Dream will be represented in the next parliament by 90 deputies. Among the opposition parties and blocs, the seats will be distributed as follows:
United National Movement – 36 mandates;
European Georgia – 5 mandates;
Lelo, Strategy Builder, Alliance of Patriots and Girchi – 4-4 mandates;
Aleko Elisashvili - Citizens – 2 mandates;
Labor Party – 1 mandate.
"As a result, through the efforts of our international partners, a multi-party parliament has been formed, with nine political unions represented, where the ruling party does not hold an excessive majority. This is the most important step forward in the development of Georgian democracy,” Kobakhidze said.
Prior to the second round of the elections held today, opposition parties called on their supporters to boycott the elections and not to cast their votes in the runoffs, as they believe that the elections were rigged by the incumbent government.
