Fresh Clashes Break Out at Tbilisi State University
TBILISI – Fresh clashes broke out at Tbilisi State University on Monday as protestors opposed to the institute’s spending policies and the election of a new chancellor clashed with supporters of the student government.
Tbilisi police were later able to calm the situation, which broke out in front of the university’s main hall.
The protests have intensified in recent days as students from nearby institutes joined the protestors to rail against the alleged corrupt spending policies of the university’s administration, including the provision of funds to privileged student government members.
The students demand the withdrawal of Giorgi Gaprindashvili’s name as a candidate for chancellor, whom they accuse of corruption and the deliberate and constant intimidation of individuals on campus, dating back to 2011. Later, Gaprindashvili has announced that he suspends his candidacy for university chancellor.
Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili came out in support of the students on 11 March.
Gaprindashvili responded to Kvirikashvili by saying he had no intention of changing his plans and will remain the sole nominee to be the steward of the university’s budget.
The demonstrators insist that the student government’s privileges be immediately abolished. They also demand that all administrative elections – including for university rector and chancellor – be held transparently and with the full involvement of the students and professors.
The protests originally broke out on 8 March and were organized by an umbrella organization of various local NGOs and social movements under the title Students Against Education Policy.
