Opposition Party Supporters Burn Ex-President Saakashvili in Effigy

BATUMI, Georgia – One person was arrested Thursday after burning Georgia’s ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili in effigy in front of the Batumi offices of Saakashvili’s United Nations Movement (UNM).

Dozens of supporters of the political organization Our Homeland gathered in front of the UNM’s office, demanding that the Government ban the party.

After setting fire to Saakashvili’s likeness, the protest turned violent as police arrested Our Homeland member for inciting hooliganism and resisting arrest.

Representatives of Our Homeland said that they refuse to allow the UNM back into power.

The group vowed to continue using all means available to them to keep the UNM out of politics.
