MFA Meets with Euro Commissioner and Members of European Parliament
STRASBURG - On a two-day visit to Strasburg, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Mikheil Janelidze, met with the EU Commissioner of Internal Affairs and Migration, Dimitris Avramopulous, and members of the European Parliament.
During the meeting with Avramopulous, the Commissioner reiterated his support for visa-liberalization for Georgia. He also stressed the importance of Georgia’s progress in all directions and said that the reforms that have taken place in Georgia are exemplary. He noted that support from the members of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs represents a strong message from the European Parliament on Georgia’s visa-liberalization process.
Avramopulous went on to express hopes that the relevant EU committees will complete the necessary procedures for a final decision so that Georgian citizens can soon enjoy a visa- free regime with the EU.
The Georgian Minister also met with members of the Euro Parliament: Vice President Ryszard Czarnecki; President of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in Europe, Hans van Baalen; European People's Party foreign policy coordinator Christian Preda; and the European Parliament Socialist Group Deputy vice-Chairman Knut Fleckenstein.
Vice President Czarnecki noted that for Georgia’s friends in the European Parliament, visa-liberalization represents the main priority. He also added that he would spare no effort for the successful completion of this process.
Meanwhile, van Baalen reiterated support for visa-liberalization for Georgia, especially in terms of executing action plan obligations.
