Police Reveals New Details about Opposition MP’s Car Explosion
TBILISI - Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Georgia announced today that one person has been detained and another charged in absentia in connection with the car explosion of an opposition United National Movement (UNM) MP, Givi Targamadze.
Targamadze’s car was blown up outside his party’s headquarters in the capital Tbilisi on October 4. The explosion left five citizens injured, however, Targamadze and his driver were not affected.
Soon after the explosion, MIA launched an investigation for attempted murder under aggravating circumstances.
The police searched apartments, cars and garages of the suspects and found evidence proving the identified two men’s involvement in the crime.
As a result of the search, MIA found special books and handwritten instructions about making explosive devices. The police also found explosive materials, remote control detonators, guns, hand grenades and the plans of Targamadze’s house and UNM office.
Moreover, the police found out that the biological material taken from Targamadze’s exploded car matched with the genetic profile of the parents of the man charged in absentia.
Gia Volsky, member of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) doubts former president of Georgia and currently Ukraine’s Odessa region Governor, Mikheil Saakashvili could be behind the car blast.
According to Volsky, Saakashvili and his allies from the UNM were planning the government overthrow and revolution in Georgia and Targamadze’s car explosion might be the part of their plan.
“The unrest scenario was made up by Saakashvili and I do not exclude that the car explosion is the part of this plan,” stated Volsky and added that the appropriate agencies would soon reveal the truth.
The UNM refuted allegations and called on MIA to conduct more effective investigation with concrete details.
