Chief Prosecutor of Georgia Delivers Annual Report

TBILISI - Georgia’s Chief Prosecutor, Irakli Shotadze, delivered his annual report to the Prosecutorial Council on Monday.

Shotadze’s presentation was attended by Prosecutorial Council members, representatives of the legislative, executive and judicial branches, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

The Chief Prosecutor presented the statistics of the last 6 months which revealed that the most widespread crime in Georgia is theft, followed by drugs, beating and domestic violence.

“The statistics show that, compared to previous years, our struggle against hate crime is much more effective," Shotadze stated.

The main topics of Shotadze’s report were the development strategy of the Prosecutor’s Office, the fight against domestic violence and violence against women and the under-aged, the fight against trafficking and terrorism and religiously motivated crimes.

He also underlined that the Prosecutor’s Office does its best to timely and effectively investigate all cases, including illegal distribution and release of private life videos.

Moreover, Shotadze claimed the Prosecutor’s Office was a very transparent and impartial institution and there were no questions left about its activities.

Irakli Shotadze, 33, is the First Chief Prosecutor approved by parliament.

The 14 member Prosecutorial Council, which was also set up last year under the Prosecutor's Office reform, selected Shotadze from three candidates for the post and presented his candidacy to parliament for approval.

The parliament approved Shotadze’s candidacy in November 2015, however, the opposition United National Movement (UNM) did not support him, saying he would fail to introduce positive moves in the Prosecutor’s Office and that he was influenced by the Government.
