Restored Pirosmani to be Exhibited at National Gallery

A newly restored Niko Pirosmani painting, titled “Sviri,” will be showcased on January 13th at Dimitri Shevardnadze National Gallery in Tbilisi. The exhibition will open at 13:00.

The museum acquired the piece in 1930. It was previously owned by Giorgi Leonidze, the famous Georgian poet, and has been exhibited only three times before, in 1957, 1968, and 1978.

Due to severe damage, the painting hasn’t been available for public viewing for almost forty years. After long and difficult restoration work by Nana Managadze, the museum’s resident restorer, it will now be exhibited for the first time as a part of the permanent exhibition, alongside Pirosmani’s other masterpieces “Hunting in India” and “A Bear in Moonlight”.
