Georgia’s Rating Remains Unchanged in Freedom House Report 2017

The Freedom House organization has released a report called "Nations in Transit 2017- The False Promise of Populism." Georgia’s rating has remained the same since the previous report.

The 2017 ratings reflect the period from January 1 through December 31, 2016, and the democracy scores and regime ratings are based on a scale of 1 to 7, with 1 representing the highest level of democratic progress and 7 the lowest. Georgia has 4.61 score overall and has been put in the category of transitional governments.

Georgia was assessed in the report according to the following parameters: election process (4.50 out of 7), civil society (3.75), independent media (4.00), national democratic governance (5.50), local democratic governance (5.25), judicial system and its independence (4.75), and corruption (4.50). 

 The report analyzes the development of democracy in 29 countries in Central Europe and Eurasia. “This year, 18 of the 29 countries in the survey suffered declines in their overall Democracy Scores, the most since 2008, when the global financial crisis fueled instability and stalled political reforms,” the report reads. The organization also says that there are now more authoritarian regimes than democracies in the region, for the first time since 1995.
