Kobuladze's "Sketch of the Opera House Curtain” on Display at Art Palace
The Georgian Museum of Theatre, Music, Cinema and Choreography (Art Palace, Kargareteli Str. 6) is displaying a unique painting “Sketch of the Opera House Curtain.” It was created by Sergo Kobuladze, famous Georgian national artist, painter, graphics maker and laureate of the Shota Rustaveli award. Its display is supported by the Georgian Ministry of Culture and Monument protection. The historical painting has been preserved Lia Tatishvili, the painter’s cousin. She was also his assistant.
After fire of the Opera House and Ballet Theatre in 1973, painter Sergo Kobulaze who decided to restore the damaged piece of the curtain work. He began by creating the second “sketch of the Opera House Curtain”. Unfortunately, however, the piece was never fully completed when the painter died in 1978. After the despairing event, Lia Tatishvili, the painter’s cousin decided to finish the historical sketch and put it up for sale.
The “Sketch of the Opera House Curtain” will be donated to the Museum Palace of Georgia and will become the lasting property for all Georgians to enjoy as part of their cultural experience. Sergo Kobuladze’s first sketch is already under the protection of Museum Palace of Georgia.
Earlier researchers of the National Research Centre discovered several never before seen paintings by the famous Georgian artist that were left in his workshop in Tbilisi upon his death.
