New Combined Cycle Thermal Power Plant Launches in Georgia

Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has opened the country's first combined cycle thermal power plant in the town of Gardabani, located 39 kilometers south of Tbilisi.

Today Garibashvili visited Gardabani to open the new 237-megawatt plant.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the construction of the plant cost $231 million and was funded by the Oil and Gas Corporation and the Partnership Fund.

The plant is capable of generating nearly double the capacity of other gas-fired power plants in Georgia.

"This plant will ensure steady energy supply in the shortest possible terms. Construction of the plant started in January last year and was completed three months ahead of schedule,” Garibashvili said.

“I want to thank the Partnership Fund, its head Irakli Kovzanadze, as well as the Oil and Gas Corporation and the construction company ÇALIK Energy for successfully bringing the project to its conclusion," he added.

Garibashvili emphasized that by building such a facility a new stage of energy development had begun in the country. He also underlined that the new thermal power plant will greatly benefit the country and contribute to Georgia’s energy security and independence.
