Russia and De Facto Abkhazia Sign Contract on Military Materials Transfer
Russia and Georgia’s breakaway region of Abkhazia have signed a contract on transfer of military materials to the Abkhazian side.
The information was released by the Ministry of Defense of Russia on Monday, which said that Russian Deputy Defense Lieutenant General Alexander Fomin held a working meeting with Chief of Staff and First Deputy Minister of Defense Colonel General Anatoly Khrulev on August 21 in Moscow.
The Ministry added that Russian-Abkhazian cooperation prospects in military sphere as well as topical issues concerning Russian military base in Abkhazia and establishing of joint force grouping of the two countries were discussed during the meeting.
“Contract on military materials transfer to Abkhazia has been signed. This procedure is carried out within the Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Abkhazia on Alliance and Strategic Partnership of November 24, 2014, outlining modernization of the Abkhazian Armed Forces,” the statement of Russian Defense Ministry said.
Russia recognized independence of breakaway Abkhazia on August 26, 2008 after the brief war between Georgia and Russia.
