Strasburg Court Assembly Appoints Lado Chanturia as Georgian Judge in ECHR
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) Assembly has selected Lado Chanturia for the post of the Judge from Georgia in the Strasburg Court.
Eka Beselia, the Chairman of the Legal Issues Committee of Georgian Parliament, stated that 120 members of the Assembly voted for Chanturia.
On the whole, there were three candidates presented for the post from Georgia, but the Assembly chose Chanturia. The other two candidates were Lali Papiashvili and Otar Sichinava.
Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili congratulated Chanturia on becoming the ECHR judge.
“He has earned this high status by his knowledge, experience and reputation,” the PM added.
The Strasbourg Court previously rejected the candidates presented by Georgia twice, forcing the special governmental commission to announce a competition for the third time.
The NGOs refused to participate in the selection process of judges, saying it was neither transparent nor impartial enough.
The NGOs released a statement saying they would not take part in the work of the special commission headed by the Justice Ministry, and calling on the Georgian government to change the rules and procedures for forming the commission.
