Georgian Film My Happy Family Now Available on Netflix

Nana Ekvtimishvili’s and Simon Gross’s film My Happy Family is the first Georgian film ever now available for international viewing on Netflix, which spans across 130 countries worldwide. 

My Happy Family by Ekvtimishvili and Gross tells a story of an ordinary Georgian family, where a 52-year mother and wife Manana, played by Georgian actress Ia Shugliashvili, decides to leave her family out of the blue. 

Among the numerous awards My Happy Family received so far are Hong Kong Film Festival, as well as the film receiving a Golden Firebird Award, “For its sensitive portrait of the social and psychological changes that are influencing the gender roles in traditional society. Both subtle and truthful, the directors crafted a realistic family dynamic with a talented ensemble of actors” Also winning a FIPRESCI prize and the best cinematography award and best film at Lecce Festival of European Cinema, best Director category at Odessa Film Festival, Grand Jury prize at Seattle International Festival, and best director at Sofia International Film Festival. Transylvanian Film Festival awarded the best performance award to Ia Shugliashvili, while Ekvtimishvili and Gross won best Directors at Wiesbaden goEast. 

After premiering at Sundance Film Festival in 2017, My Happy Family was screened at the New Directors, New Films 2017 Festival programme at MOMA New York in March 2017.
