Georgia’s Agriculture Minister Queries Proposed Wheat and Bread Price Increase

Otar Danelia, Georgia’s Minister of Agriculture, has questioned the rationale behind a proposed increase in wheat and bread prices in Georgia.

"It would not be logical if wheat and bread prices increased in Georgia. Accordingly, we must use all methods to prevent this. The state will do its best to assist this industry. We are keeping a close eye on the ongoing processes,” Danelia noted.

According to the minister, several meetings have been held on the subject and more are scheduled.

Danelia added that Georgia has a surplus of wheat and, in general, prices on the market have decreased.

Several days earlier, Malkhaz Dolidze, Chairman of the Bakery Products Association, said that the price of wheat had increased by 3-4 GEL due to the depreciation of the Georgian currency.

Dolidze had said that for the same reason bread prices were expected to rise in Georgia in autumn, if not before.
