Georgia’s Margvelashvili Receives Award from Greek Parliament Speaker
Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili received the Parliamentary Pericles Award as a sign of respect from the Parliamentary Speaker of Greece, Nikos Voutsis.
Margvelashvili was awarded the award on February 8, during his two-day official visit to Greece.
The Georgian President and Greek Parliament Speaker discussed mutual cooperation, as well as recent developments in Georgia’s Russian-occupied Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions.
According to Margvelashvili, Georgia and Greece will continue strategic cooperation, adding this relationship started 15 centuries ago.
"Georgia's European choice was not made yesterday, it was made when we and Greece – then the Byzantine Empire, had a mutual vision about the future of our countries and the region. I want to thank you for the strong support we now see from the Greek side,” he added.
The President of Georgia welcomed the dynamic development of relations between the Parliaments of the two states, and the strengthening of cooperation in various fields.
The importance of cooperation in multilateral parliamentary formats was also emphasized, such as the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, NATO PA and OSCE Parliamentary Assemblies.
The sides also talked about NATO summit preparation works. The strong support from Greece towards Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic integration was also noted.
Giorgi Margvelashvili also met the President of Greece, Prokopis Pavlopoulos , Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the leaders of opposition parties.
