Parliament Speakers of Georgia, Cyprus Meet in Tbilisi

For the first time during 25 years of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Cyprus, the President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus paid an official visit to Georgia.

Demetris Syllouris and his Georgian counterpart, Irakli Kobakhidze met in Tbilisi on Monday afternoon.

The parties noted that both Parliaments are able to contribute to the enhancement of friendly and strategic relations, and underlined importance of economic ties and usage of strategic location of the countries for the benefit of the population.

Kobakhidze thanked his guest for supporting both the sovereignty and territorial integrity and Euro-Atlantic aspirations of Georgia. He updated Syllouris on the ongoing reforms in the country, aiming at enhancement of statehood, democracy and the economic well-being of Georgia.

After the meeting, the parties made joint statements to the press.

“I believe that this visit will significantly contribute to the development of bilateral relations. During 25 years, our relations have dynamically and positively developed. We have good political, economic and cultural links, which we discussed today,” Kobakhidze stated.

He noted that both countries share the challenges related to territorial integrities requiring joint efforts. Kobakhidze underlined that such problems should be resolved only by peaceful manner.

The Parliament Speaker of Cyprus expressed a wish to advance the relationship between the two countries, adding a Georgian monastery will soon be built in Cyprus.

“Cyprus will have a Georgian Monastery in a very picturesque region. There are ruins of Georgian churches as well, and it is the most ancient region of our country,” Demetris Syllouris stated.

The Parliament Speaker of Cyprus also met the President of Georgia, Giorgi Margvelashvili.

Demetris Syllouris will leave Georgia on March 21.
