Georgia, Belarus Sign Mutual Visa-Free Deal
The governments of Georgia and the Republic of Belarus have signed an agreement on visa-free travel between the two countries.
The agreement was signed on March 22 by Georgia’s Vice-Premier and Foreign Minister, Mikheil Janelidze, and his Belarusian counterpart, Vladimir Makei.
The event was held within the frames of the official visit of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, after the meeting of the delegations at the Presidential Palace in Tbilisi.
Before signing a bilateral agreement, visa-free travel between Georgia and Belarus was based on a multilateral agreement.
Within the frames of the Belarusian delegation's visit to Georgia, Minister Janelidze also held a bilateral meeting with his Belarusian colleague.
The sides talked about the cooperation between Georgia and the Republic of Belarus in the political, economic and cultural and humanitarian fields.
The Presidents of Georgia and Belarus also signed a framework agreement on cooperation between the two countries, an agreement which involves recognition of universal principles of international law and respect for sovereign teritorial integrity in internationally recognized borders.
According to Tengiz Pkhaladze, Advisor to President Margvelashvili for Foreign Affairs, the framework agreement, signed along with other agreements, is of utmost importance as it defines a long-term strategy of cooperation between Georgia and Belarus.
