Georgian PM Meets Council of Europe’s Rapporteur Group on Democracy

The Prime Minister of Georgia, Giorgi Kvirikashvili, hosted the members of the Council of Europe’s Rapporteur Group on Democracy.

The progress achieved in democratic consolidation of Georgia, the government’s four-point plan of reforms and the situation on the occupied territories of Georgia were the key issues discussed by the sides at the meeting on March 22.

The Prime Minister’s Press Service reported that the guests positively assessed the democratic processes in the country.

A fruitful cooperation between the Council of Europe and Georgia was underlined by the sides. They also expressed readiness for further strengthening of bilateral relations.

It was said at the meeting that after May 2019, Georgia will Chair the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers.

Kvirikashvili emphasized the importance of the support of the Council of Europe member states in the progress achieved by Georgia.

The PM also focused on the human rights and the humanitarian situation in the occupied regions of Georgia, noting that Russia continues to carry out illegal actions directed against the factual annexation of Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region, which should be appropriately responded to by the international community.

The members of the delegation expressed strong support for Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The purpose of the visit of Europe’s Rapporteur Group on Democracy was to assess the implementation of the Council of Europe Action Plan and to seek additional funding for the projects envisaged by the plan.
