Georgia Goes Dark For Earth Hour
As countries across the globe put their efforts together at the annual Earth Hour, Georgian state buildings switched off their lights for an hour on the weekend to issue a statement for environmental protection.
In support of the initiative, Georgia turned off the lights from 20:30 to 21:30. Numerous private households and companies also participated.
“Earth Hour 2018 mobilized people to 'connect to earth' and share what nature means to them, in the places they live in and care about,” the official Earth Hour webpage states.
Earth Hour aims to mobilize all sectors of society, ranging from individuals to businesses and public institutions. The more people renounce the luxury of electricity for one hour, the stronger the echoes the statement has among the wider public.
Although our environmental impact decreases only slightly, the initiative calls for a responsible and sustainable way in which to produce and consume energy. The initiative is an exemple of the growing international community aiming at reducing the impact of man-made environmental alterations.
Launched in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, the movement later expanded to thousands of cities and celebrated its 11th anniversary this Saturday.
