Georgian Junior Judokas Impress in St. Petersburg
It was another successful event for young Georgian judokas as they won a total of four medals at the recent European Juniors Judo Cup in St. Petersburg, Russia. The event was held on 14 April and 15 April hosting a total of 17 nations competing for the precious gold medals.
With one gold medal, one silver medal, and two bronze medals, Georgia scored the 4th place in the country ranking, being only beaten by Azerbaijan, Japan, and Russia.
Luka Maisuradze, who won the silver medal at last year’s European Cup, left his competition far behind this time and took home gold in the weight category under 81kg. Vladimir Akhalkatsi and Lasha Bekauri finished second and third, respectively, in the same category adding two more medals to the collection.
Mikheil Bekauri won the last bronze medal in the category under 90kg by defeating Imeda Gogoladze, who is a fellow Georgian judoka.
Every year, youngsters have the chance to show their skills in competitions, such as the one in St. Petersburg. They provide a platform to show off their talent while being closely watched by scouts and trainers from across Europe.
St. Petersburg hosted over 259 athletes competing in 16 different categories. Georgia attended the event with 9 athletes.
