Fire Devastates Residential Area in Batumi
Last night, a fire broke out in Batumi, leaving residents and government officials in a tense state. Authorities were battling the flames all night as the fire spread more rapidly than expected.
The fire started around the Leoghand Hotel in Batumi, which is constructed in a barrack-type style using a lot of wood in their furniture. Within a couple of minutes, the fire spread to other residential houses around the hotel, before the emergency services could fully respond.
At the moment, the reasons for the fire are still unknown and Batumi City Hall says police started an investigation to understand the cause of the disaster.
Seven families had to move out of their houses and will be temporarily sheltered under an assistance program, as their homes were destroyed by the fire.
"Our main task is to remove the population to safety and this process is already underway. The Batumi City Hall will take victims to rental properties. At the same time, we will think about compensation. It is not possible to discuss investor companies' proposals. There may be a new modern building and the population will be satisfied. Various options have been offered. Of course, we will be involved as much as possible and we will do our best to take care of the victims," Zurab Pataridze said.
One firefighter was taken into hospital as a result of smoke inhalation; however, theCity Hall issued a statement saying his condition is stable.
