PM Congratulates Media Representatives on World Press Freedom Day
May 3 sees journalists and societies worldwide celebrating World Press Freedom Day.
Prime Minister of Georgia, Giorgi Kvirikashvili, at today's governmental meeting, congratualted the Georgian press.
"It is vitally important that substantial changes have taken place in Georgia in terms of media freedom," he said. "The Reporters without Borders international organization commends these changes. In 2011-2012, according to the ratings from this most reputable organization, Georgia held 105th position for media freedom. Today, however, we are ranked 61st, ahead of more than one European state. I believe it is very important for our citizens to have independent and objective information."
This week, Reporters without Borders advanced Georgia’s ranking from 64th to 61st.
"Our citizens need to know about both problems and positive developments," he told Georgian media representatives. "Hope for tomorrow is absolutely essential. It drives the economy, investments, creating positive expectations among people concerning prospects of long-term development, and it is very important to have such expectations in the country, especially since they have absolutely objective grounds for that."
