IDFI Releases Domestic Violence Statistics in Georgia 2013-2018
Non-Governmental Organization Institute for Development of Freedom of Information (IDFI) has released the Domestic Violence Statistics 2013-2018, which shows that 3599 women and 497 men in Georgia became victims of domestic violence in 2017 only.
The data shows that the cases of domestic violence have significantly increased in the last several years.
2011 - 253 women and 32 men became the victims of domestic violence
2012 - 308 woman and 27 men
2013 - 220 women and 20 men
2014 - 742 women and 87 men
2015 – 2301 female and 337 male victims
2016 - 2585 woman and 381 men became the victims of domestic violence
“Beginning with 2015, the number of domestic violence cases was increasing by 50%, which indicates a sharp increase in the number of willing complaints,” the NGO stated.
IDFI says that the largest number of domestic violence cases were documented in Tbilisi, Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi and Kakheti.
Moreover, the indicator of the number of cases closed decreased sharply in 2016 when compared to previous years.
According to the NGO, compared to previous years, the number of restrictive orders issues by the police increased the most sharply in 2015 and 2017.
2013 – 224 restraining orders were issued
2014 – 817 orders
2015 – 2598
2016 – 2877
2017 – 4370
2018 - by April 19 police issued 1513 domestic violence restraining orders.
