Georgia Saddened by Guatemala Volcano Disaster
Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIA) expresses deep sorrow over the eruption of volcano Fuego near the city Guatemala in Guatemala Republic which claimed lives of at least 62 people.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia expresses its support to the families of the deceased and expresses solidarity to the government of Guatemala and the people during this difficult period,” the statement of MIA reads.
The death toll from Guatemala's Fuego volcano eruption keeps rising, and now more hazards threaten grieving residents.
According to CNN, at least 62 people were killed after the volcano erupted on Sunday, spewing a river of lava and plumes of smoke almost 6 miles into the air.
The deadly volcano covered the villages in ash. Rescuers in helicopters managed to pull at least 10 people alive from ash drifts and mud flows that were up to the rooflines of some homes, forcing first responders to use sledgehammers to break through the roofs to see if anyone was trapped inside.
According to Reuters, at least 300 people have been hospitalized.
It was the 3,763-meter (12,346-feet) volcano’s second eruption this year.
