8 Arrested by Georgian MIA for Attempted Illegal Border Crossing

Georgia’s border police and state security service arrested eight people today in the Adjara region, near the Georgia-Turkey border. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia reported that the people were coming from Georgia and attempting to cross illegally into Turkey without presenting themselves to the Turkish border control.

The detained people are citizens of Sri Lanka. The offence, when committed by foreign citizens, is punishable by four-five years in prison.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia reports that 38 cases of attempted illegal border crossings were discovered in 2016, while 55 such cases were recorded in 2015.
