Worker, 35, Dies on Construction Site in Georgia
A 35-year old worker died at a construction site in Atskuri village, Akhaltsikhe Municipality, Kvemo Kartli, on June 3.
Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched an investigation into the case. The MIA says that preliminary results show the man died of an electrical injury.
The deceased worker is the 25th employee to have died this year in a workplace. 19 more have been severely injured so far while performing their duties.
In early July, two more workers died at work - 32-year-old Khvicha Gvelesiani and Khvicha Tabatadze, 36.
Gvelesiani died in Darkvetli village, Chiatura municipality, while working in a sand quarry. He was trying to cut the cliff with a tractor when the sand mass fell on him. By the time the vehicle was dug out, he was already dead, and Tabatadze died in Gudauri while dismantling a metal crane.
Georgian Trade Unions and non-governmental Organizations are calling on the government to tighten labor safety monitoring at workplaces.
Georgian Parliament adopted a law on Labor Safety, with the third and final reading on March 7, but it has yet to take effect.
