Team of Georgian Students Win 6 Medals at Int’l Mathematical Olympiad

Six Georgian high-school students have won 1 silver and 6 bronze medals at the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held on July 7-14 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

The Georgian team members were Nikoloz Birekadze, Aleksandre Khokhiashvili, Dimitry Korkotashvili, Saba Lepsveridze, Luka Mushkudiani and Teimuraz Toloraia.

Of them, Saba Lepsveridze won the silver and the others received bronze medals.

The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Georgia reports that Georgian team showed one of the best results at the Olympiad and won 212 points from a total 252. The team took the 27th place.

This year, 107 countries from 5 continents participated in the Olympiad.

During the competition, contestants had to solve, individually, two contest papers on two consecutive days, with three problems each day. Each problem was worth seven points. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded in the ratio of 1:2:3 according to the overall results — just half of the contestants receive a medal.

In order to encourage as many students as possible to solve complete problems, certificates of honorable mention are awarded to students not receiving a medal, who obtained 7 points for at least one problem.

Georgia has been taking part in the IMO since 1993.
