Former President of Georgia on Fox News
Former President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, spoke out about the summit between Trump and Putin on Fox News, saying President Trump is keeping his friends close and enemies even closer, which might be a mistake.
"I've met Putin about thirty times and I know him quite well. As for President Trump, he does what he thinks his principle is- to keep his friends close and enemies even closer. Putin is a real devil. He is a murderer, he cannot bear the US. He believes that the US is the number one enemy that he must destroy. Everything he does, including in his neighborhood, is caused by this disgust towards the US. He invaded [Georgisa] because he thought we were an ally of America. So I have no illusions about him," - said the former President of Georgia.
Saakashvili also stated that Putin does not bluff, unlike his western counterparts; that he has no need for it as there is not usually a political price to pay for it. Unfortunately, his counterparts do not listen. He also stated that Georgia has already paid the price of the west’s misperception of the Russian threat and that they should start taking it seriously.
It was also said that President Trump should not lose sight of the fact that he doesn’t owe Putin anything, that he indeed holds the upper hand; that sanctions are hurting Russia one way or the other, so America does have the floor for now.
“It’s America’s turn to make demands. Russia should stop positioning itself as equal to the United States and stop pretending its foreign adventures, be they in Syria, Ukraine or Georgia, are part of a global fight against American expansionism. Moreover, Russia must stop threatening the U.S. with new weaponry, as Putin did during a recent address to the Russian Parliament,” said Saakashvili.
