MEP Mamikins Supports Georgia's Euro-Atlantic Aspirations
The Rapporteur of the Foreign Relations Committee of the European Parliament, Andrejs Mamikins, who arrived in Tbilisi on July 23 to prepare the report on the European Union Association Agreement implementation by Georgia, says he wants Georgia to become a member of the European Union.
The MEP made the statement at the meeting with the Georgian Prime Minister, Mamuka Bakhtadze.
“I expressed my personal willingness to see Georgia in the future as a political part of the European Union. Of course I am speaking about full membership," stated Mamikins.
The sides discussed already-implemented and also planned reforms in the country, along with the significant success achieved towards implementation of the Association Agreement (AA) between the EU and Georgia.
As Mamikins noted, Georgia has attained impressive progress in many directions, thus serving as a role model for European countries.
The MEP also praised the socio-economic policy of the Government of Georgia. According to him, the current Cabinet of Ministers of Georgia stands ready to pursue the pro-European vector in domestic and international policies and to protect its people.
Ongoing developments and the security situation in Georgia’s occupied regions and the whole region were also discussed by the parties.
Mamuka Bakhtadze expressed his gratitude to the MEP for the endorsed resolution by the European Parliament - 10 Years Since the Russian Invasion to Occupied Territories of Georgia, which evidences the support towards sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia, condemns the occupation of the Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions - integral parts of Georgia - by the Russian Federation, and calls on its Member States to enforce sanctions to individuals referred in the Otkhozoria-Tatunashvili List.
