Tbilisi Road Accidents in Jan-June Leave 1800 Injured, 46 Dead

At least 1800 people were injured and 46 have died in Tbilisi as a result of the road accidents in January-June 2018, said Eka Laliashvili, the Chairperson of the Board of Georgian Alliance for Safe Roads.

Laliashvili positively assessed Tbilisi Transport Policy presented by Mayor Kakha Kaladze on July 24, but added that more focus should be made on road safety.

“This vision is really European and will help build a European city. The only thing is that more emphasis should be made on road safety, pedestrian protection and infrastructure,” she added.

According to Laliashvili, in the first six months of 2017, 43 people died due to road accidents in Tbilisi, meaning the number is up this year.

She also mentioned the Green Economy Concept presented by the PM Mamuka Bakhtadze, but noted that road safety is not included in that either.

The Tbilisi Transport Policy envisages replacement of all old yellow buses running in Tbilisi with new, eco-friendly, EU standard blue buses in 2018-2019 and 14 carriages will be added to the metro in order to reduce the waiting intervals between train, meaning both the Tbilisi Transport Policy and Green Economy Concept focus on making public transport more comfortable and accessible in order to reduce the number of cars in the country. Road Safety has yet to be addressed.
