EU Project Enables Ukraine to Reduce Energy Consumption

In the Ukrainian town of Slavutych, the EU’s “Covenant of Mayors – Demonstration Projects” initiative lead to the renovation of two public buildings to make them more energy efficient.

The Covenant of Mayors Demonstration Projects are part of the EU4Energy Initiative which promotes energy efficiency and the use of renewables in the Eastern partnership (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine). The EU4Energy Initiative finances projects and programs that help to reform energy markets and to reduce national energy dependence and consumption.

Compared to 2014, the town has cut down its energy consumption by 23%, and CO2 emissions were reduced by 5%. If we take a look at the two renovated buildings, they now consume 44% less energy which saves €30,000 on heating costs each year. As a result, since the renovation, the investment has been increasing in the area of energy efficiency in particular.

In addition, the project implemented workshops and information sessions about energy efficiency in Slavutych.
