World Bank Supports Georgian Education Reform
Georgian Minister of Education Mikheil Batiashvili and Deputy Minister Irina Abuladze met with World Bank regional director, Mercy Tembon, to discuss Georgia's education system reform strategy. The meeting was aimed at determining the types of reforms to be implemented by the Georgian government and the potential support the World bank can offer.
Batiashvili noted the development assistance provided by the World Bank for years, and said he expected this support to Georgia to continue.
Tembon agreed, saying that the World Bank will provide a high-priority support to Georgian education reform. During the meeting, human capital development was highlighted as a key component of education.
The World Bank is taking part in the Education System Reform Group which began with a meeting on August 8. The working partners of the government in this project are the British Council, the World Bank and several technology companies.
Batiashvili established the reform group, in part, to develop and strengthen the technological component at all stages of education, and wants reforms to be definitely oriented towards European standards.
