Winner of First "Best Sommelier in Georgia" Competition Announced

Ghvinobistve, which means "wine month" in Georgian, is a series of events organized by the National Wine Agency to celebrate the grape harvest and wine making season. 

Events were held from October 5 - 21 in Tbilisi and other regions of the country. 

The festival closed on Sunday with an awards ceremony recognizing the winners of the “Best Sommelier of Georgia – 2018” competition. The competition was organized by the Georgian Sommelier Association and the National Wine Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.

Participants in the competition were professional sommeliers, certified by the Georgian Sommelier Association.

The jury was composed of Georgian and internetional sommeliers and wine makers, including the President of the Georgian Sommelier Association and founder of winery Marani Khetsuriani, Shalva Khetsuriani.

On October 21 at 18:00 at the Republic Event Hall, Tamaz Tamazashvili was crowned Best Sommelier of Georgia – 2018. He was awarded a trophy cup of “Best Sommelier of Georgia," along a prize basket from a variety of wine makers. This March, Tamazashvili will travel to Belgium to represent Georigan in the Best Sommelier world championship.

The Georgian Sommelier Association was founded in 2003, and since 2014 has been a full member of the International Sommelier Association. The Georgian Sommelier Association is the official provider in Georgia of WSET international qualifications in wine education.
