Underground Parking Lot on Orbeliani Square Completed
The Mayor of Tbilisi, Kakha Kaladze, visited the rehabilitation works on Grigol Orbeliani Square, which are being implemented by the Tbilisi Development Fund within the project "New Tiflis."
The primary construction work of an underground parking lot for 150 cars has already been completed and the finishing touches are now being added.
"By the end of the year the rehabilitation works of the buildings will be completed, afterwards the amenity works will be started. We have added some addresses and we have made a decision for their rehabilitation as well. We also plan to rehabilitate the existing square in order to renew the district in a unified style. I do believe Tbilisi will be one of the best places for the local population as well as tourists. This is the beauty of our city, which needs maintenance and care," said Kaladze.
The rehabilitation of the Orbeliani Square will include the restoration-rehabilitation of up to 20 addresses. Two of them, Atoneli N9 and N11, are already completed. Additionally, the restoration of decorative elements and metal railings have been completed at several locations.
Within the ongoing rehabilitation works, 13 monuments of cultural heritage will be preserved. The rehabilitation of as many as 10 additional buildings is also being considered.
In 2017, water, sewage, and natural gas lines were completely renovated on Orbeliani Square, as they had not been functioning properly for some time. That project cost 10 million GEL ($3.86 mln).
The so-called Flower Market and recreational spaces will be arranged and renovated as well. When the works are finished, Tbilisi will have another pedestrian zone, which will include parts of Pkhovi and Atoneli Streets, neighboring Orbeliani Square. The focus area of the rehabilitation stretches from Dry Bridge, via Atoneli and Pkhovi Streets, to Alexandre Pushkin Street, including Khazina and Purtseladze streets, as well as part of Grigol Orbeliani Square and 9 April Garden. This section is a continuation of the greater tourist route from Mushtaidi Garden to Freedom Square via the renovated David Aghmashenebeli Avenue.
