Women Murder Rate Decreases by 58% in Georgia in 2018

Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reports that the murder rate of women decreased by 58% in Georgia in 2018.

The MIA claims that this year there were no cases of a husband killing a woman.

“As a result of the preventive measures taken by the Ministry, women's murders decreased by 58% in 2018. In addition, no cases of women murders by a husband or former husband have been recorded this year, while in 2017, 10 cases of murder of a spouse and/or ex-wife were recorded," the MIA said.

The MIA statistics of recent years are as follows:

2016 - 32 women were killed, of which 14 were killed by a family member and 18 by another person.

2017 - 26 women were killed, of which 14 were killed by a family member and 12 by another person.

2018 - In 10 months, 11 women were killed, of which five were killed by a family member and 6 by another person.

The MIA added that in 2018, reports on cases of violence against women increased significantly, and more than 4,000 cases of violence and domestic crime have been investigated. Criminal prosecution was launched against 3,000 people.
