Police Hopes to Reduce Road Accidents with Laser Speed Devices

The International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Section of the US Embassy in Tbilisi has gifted the Patrol Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia 9 speed measurement devices.

The laser technology devices are used by law enforcement departments worldwide to curb speeding and reduce accidents. As speeding is one of the biggest causes of traffic accidents in Georgia, it is hoped that the devices will make the roads safer and save lives by enforcing the speed limit.

Georgian police officers have been trained in the usage of the Light Detection and Ranging devices (LiDAR) during a four-day training for LiDAR Certification within the Traffic Enforcement Assistance program. 20 patrol police officers who are mainly responsible for traffic safety attended training on November 12 - 15.

Georgian roads are infamous for being chaotic and often dangerous. According to Georgia’s Alliance for Safe Roads and official data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, road accidents were up 7% in the first eight months of 2018.
