Politicians Comment on Justice Min's Possible Resignation
The recent statement of the Justice Minister of Georgia, Thea Tsulukiani, saying she may resign, was followed by comments from both majority and minority politicians.
The minister made the statement on Monday and said that if her opinion is not taken into account regarding an important issue in the ministry, she will resign. She did not specify what the controversial issue is that might result in her resignation.
Deputy Parliament Speaker and member of the ruling party Georgian Dream (GD) Gia Volsky says the issue mentioned by the minister refers to the unification of the Penitentiary Service with the Justice Ministry.
Volsky says it is good that Tsulukiani speaks about the problem openly and publicly, adding he has no more information about the issue.
“Some say her statement was an ultimatum, some say it was an expression of anger, while yet others associate this with her character. But the fact that she speaks so openly aims at attracting public interest towards this issue,” he said.
A former member of the GD, Eka Beselia, says Tsulukiani is one of the most distinguished officials in government.
“She is one of the most experienced ministers and I hope her decision will not harm the reforms implemented by the country,” she added.
On Tuesday, Tsulukiani made more comments regarding the recent developments, saying the issue mentioned by her does not refer either to the penitentiary service or to the transfer of the President’s Pardoning Commission to the ministry.
“The discussions over this issue are underway inside the team and they will be over this week, I think,” she added.
