ABL between Georgia and Occupied Tskhinvali Reopens

The Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission to Georgia (EUMM), Erik Hoeg confirms that the boundary line (ABL) between Georgia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia), currently occupied by Russia, has reopened after 63 days of closure.

“We confirm that today crossings at South Ossetian #AdministrativeBoundaryLine have been resumed after two months and people can move across #ABL again. #EUMM continues monitoring the security situation and freedom of movement along South Ossetian and Abkhazian #ABL,” – reads the post of Hoeg.

The so-called border was closed by the de facto leadership of the region on January 11, which stated the spread of the H1N1 respiratory virus across Georgia was the main reason for the given decision.

The restriction of free movement created significant problems for the residents of the region, as they were deprived access to important services.

The ABL of Abkhazia, another occupied region of Georgia, was opened on February 6, which had been closed also on January 11 for the same reason.
