Ivane Matchavariani Meets with Edward Yau
The Minister of Finance of Georgia Ivane Matchavariani held a meeting with the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of Hong Kong SAR Government, Edward Yau on March 19. Yau leads the high-level business delegation of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), which is paying an official visit to Georgia.
The major aim of the visit is to explore the investment environ of Georgia and establish business contacts with the Georgian partners.
At the meeting the parties discussed the field of bilateral collaboration and accentuated the significance of the free trade agreement, signed by Georgia and Hong Kong.
“It is remarkable that Georgia is the first country in the region, Hong Kong has signed the free trade agreement with. The document came into force in February 2019, and it aims to define the free trade conditions between Georgia and Hong Kong and assist the process of trade with particular services.”
The perspectives for the enhancement of business communications and partnership in a number of fields, including: trade, enterprise, road, railway and sea infrastructure and technologies, were also discussed at the meeting in the Ministry of Finance.
Ivane Matchavariani presented the already carried out and upcoming reforms, aimed at the improvement of the business environ in Georgia to the guests, and noted that it is important for Georgia to share the experience of Hong Kong, as one of the world’s leading financial centers.
Much emphasis was put one the significant transit function of Georgia.
The Minister of Finance noted that the country allocates major financial resources for the development of the transport corridor, which will contribute to the strengthening of Georgia’s potential, as the gateway and logistics hub between Europe and Asia
The parties expressed their hope that the panel ‘Investment Opportunities in Georgia’, held in Tbilisi, will increase the interest towards the country and support the further cooperation between Georgia and Hong Kong.
