Georgian Stamp to be Sold on eBay for $631’173
The Georgian postage stamp ‘Tiflis Unica’ is being sold on eBay with a starting bid of €555’000 (approximately $631’173).
According to the site, the stamp is one of the oldest of its kind and was used for postal payments between Tbilisi and Kojori. Nowadays only a few copies of the stamp are thought to be left in the world.
‘Tiflis Unica’ was printed in 1857. Only three unused copies of the stamp are thought to remain. These stamps have had numerous previous owners.
During its last auction in 2008 ‘Tiflis Unica’ sold for $700’000. In the philatelic directory it is listed as one of the world’s most expensive and rare postage stamps.
No collectors have bid to own the stamp so far, with seven days still remaining on the auction.
There are thought to be around 200 philatelists in Georgia, who each add new stamps to their collections each year. Both local and foreign collectors wish to own Georgian stamps. The ‘Tiflis Unica’ has such a high price tag because of its unique nature.
