Georgia Reiterates Support to People of Venezuela

Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze once again commented on the recent developments in Venezuela, Caracas, where violent clashes occurred between supporters of Venezuela’s Interim President Juan Guaido and the military units that stayed on the side of President Nicolás Maduro, whom the opposition leader is trying to unseat.

Bakhtadze took to Twitter to express the solidarity of Georgia to the people of Venezuela.

Maduro accused Guaido and his political mentor Leopoldo López of seeking to spark an armed confrontation that might be used as a pretext for foreign military intervention.

“They failed in their plan. They failed in their call because the people of Venezuela want peace,” Maduro said on Tuesday.

He claimed the “perpetrators will be punished” and they would face criminal prosecution “for the serious crimes that have been committed against the constitution, the rule of law and the right to peace.”

Following Maduro’s claims, Guaido released a video saying there was no attempt of a military coup but “a peaceful rebellion” and urged supporters to return to the streets on Wednesday to continue what he called the final stage of “Operation Freedom”.

He also said Maduro no longer enjoyed the support of the armed forces. Guaido called on people to take to the streets and have a large march on 1 May, which is also international workers’ day.
