Ingushetia, Next Georgia? The Fight against Animal Circuses
Animal circuses have been banned in Magas, the capital city of Ingushetia, Russian media reports. The decision was made by Beslan Tsechoev, the Mayor of the city, who stated that the living conditions of animals used in performances are not "up to standards."
Magas was preparing to host the Circus-Chapito on May 6, however, after investigation, it was concluded that the circus is not a safe place for animals.
“Animals do not represent lifeless objects for entertainment. They are living creatures which belong in the wild,” stated the Mayor.
As a result of the initiative, documentaries about the importance of the environment and animal preservation have been shown to children in schools and kindergartens across the city of Magas.
Tbilisi has also been engaged in large-scale campaigns against animal circuses and launched a number of projects to increase the public awareness of the issue.
On May 4, at 17:00, a protest rally is scheduled against the upcoming visit of the Yuri Nikulin Circus from Moscow to Tbilisi.
All those who would like to join the fight against the unbearable conditions animals are kept in at circuses are welcome to join the campaign. A petition will be available for signing during the event to push for legislative changes to ban animal circuses from the territory of Georgia.
