Police Arrest Five at Anti-Fascist Counter-Demonstration
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has reported that police arrested five people during counter-demonstrations on May 9.
The individuals were arrested in Vake Park in Tbilisi at the Immortal Regiment March, a Russian-encouraged demonstration. One person was detained for using soviet symbols whilst four people were arrested for disobeying the police and hooliganism. A further person was given a warning.
Tamar Chugoshvili, the Vice Parliament Speaker, responded to the counter-demonstrations by saying that Russia occupies Georgia and that she is disappointed that others think that this is not the case. Nonetheless, she underlined the importance of freedom of expression in Georgia.
All of the detainees have since been released.
